WHAT’S THE D IN DiSC?

Let’s get straight to it, the D or Dominance Style values directness, forward momentum, achieving goals and a good challenge. They have a need for achievement and fear loss of control. Ideally for them, projects keep moving at a fast pace, they can focus on the big picture, and are able to take the lead to make things happen.

The D style can often come across as blunt and direct to other styles, however this is mostly because they tend to be slightly more skeptical of ideas and are more action oriented than people focused.

They naturally focus their energy on Action, Results and Challenge, and tend to appear confident and self-assured to those around them. They typically enjoy having control over others in that this allows them to get things done, make decisions and achieve results.

How to work effectively with them:

  1. Be direct and to the point. D Style coworkers will appreciate you providing the big picture in an efficient manner or asking direct questions and making it clear what you need from them.
  2. Don’t be offended if they seem blunt by your standards (this is especially applicable to those with an S or i Style), D Style people are just direct and may overlook your feelings in their focus on the big picture. If you feel taken aback by something a D Style colleagues says, point it out, and ask for clarification, in most cases, you will find it is a simple miscommunication.
  3. Feel free to voice your concerns or opinions, D Styles most likely won’t take offence and will appreciate your direct approach. However, don’t focus on the negatives or attempt to slow things down too much, make an effort to provide ideas and solutions to help with keeping the project moving.
