HOW TO WORK WITH INTER-GENERATIONS IN THE WORKPLACE
We all work with Inter-Generations. Associates, project teams, clients and suppliers who come from different generations, we’ve all been bought up in very different times, our ideas, experiences and thoughts all differ, there’s many reasons for this, but one of them is generational.
Everyone is expected to respect each other in the workplace, but how can we, when we just don’t understand each other? You’ve heard people talk about ‘The Generation Gap!’ This is where one generation simply doesn’t understand another, there’s a dis-connect. One person is talking in ‘their language’ and the other person is lost in what they’re trying to say, understand and comprehend. It goes for actions, thoughts, behaviours and understandings.
We’re not the first to have this as a problem. Each generation brings something new, new challenges, new understandings and creates gaps. Each generation brings new ideas, better technology and even bigger gaps. But ultimately it brings greater opportunities.
We should embrace Inter-Generations by ensuring our next generation of leaders understand the different generations, know how to work to their strengths, while managing, guiding and allowing each generation to bring their strength to the team, job, company.
Complaining doesn’t work. Action does.
